No horse has such a special need for optimal nutrition as the developing foal, both before and after birth. In the first four weeks of life, feeding a foal causes few problems because the mother mare
which provides nutrition in the form of mare's milk in the correct composition and dosage. From the middle of the second month of life onwards, supplementary feeding should be carried out systematically, as this is the only way to ensure that the nutrients required for optimal development, especially of the skeleton and the musculoskeletal system, are supplied. If this is missed in the first year of life, it will be difficult to make up for it later. Positioning errors as well as joint, bone and tendon diseases in foals, weanlings and yearlings can be the result of nutrient deficiencies and imbalances. What should be emphasized is the increased tendency to form bone chips these days. Although this is primarily caused by genetics, scientific knowledge shows that it can be limited through appropriate husbandry, including feeding certain nutrients.
The supplementary feeding of micronutrients is therefore of great importance for overall vitality, good development and future performance.
For the development of the skeleton, an adequate supply of calcium, phosphorus, zinc, selenium, copper, ß-carotene (or vitamin A) and vitamin E is important. Especially under practical conditions, significant deficits and imbalances can often be seen in this supply area, as the basic feed often shows gaps in the supply of vital substances. Calcium and vitamin D3 are largely responsible for the strength and optimal development of bones. Important antioxidants such as vitamin A, C and vitamin E protect the growing animal as well as the pregnant and lactating mare from harmful oxygen radicals.
Particular attention is also paid to a balanced supply of the trace elements zinc and copper. Studies on the mineral supply of foals (e.g. “The quantity and trace element supply of warmblood foals during the first six months of life, taking into account the occurrence of osteochondrosis”, diss. Maike Grenel 2002) have shown that, for example, the foal's copper and zinc supply comes from mare's milk alone is not guaranteed. Copper is, among other things, important for bone mineralization. Copper deficiency can not only lead to skeletal changes but also to anemia. It is important that both elements are in a balanced relationship to one another. An increased deposition of minerals in the bones was not found when zinc and copper were fed alone, but was found when supplemented with a complete trace element mixture. It is assumed that the influence of other trace elements such as iron, manganese, cobalt and iodine on the mineralization of bones is significant.

Feeding recommendation:
20 g of Atcom Junior-Vital per 100 kg of body weight
During situations of increased need (e.g. coat change) or at the beginning of feeding an ATCOM product (this makes it easier to replenish potentially empty nutrient stores and meet the additional requirement), we recommend a dosage of 30 g ATCOM JUNIOR-VITAL per 100 kg of body weight daily . This amount should be fed for a period of 4-6 weeks. You can then switch to the dosage of 20g/100kg body weight.
The current body weight should be used as a basis for the amounts to be fed. Please make sure to regularly adjust the amount of JUNIOR-VITAL to be fed to the foal's increasing body weight.
ATCOM Junior-VITAL is a pelleted supplementary feed. It must be mixed with the main feed in the specified quantities for each feeding.
Do I need to feed additional minerals or similar?
Feeding additional supplementary food can and should be avoided in order to avoid a nutrient imbalance or oversupply.
