Magnesium is involved in the activation of more than 300 enzymes and is therefore one of the most important minerals for the horse's organism. Magnesium is responsible for the breakdown and energy utilization of macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins and lipids and therefore plays an important role in energy metabolism in the cells. It has an important function as a calcium antagonist for the heart muscles and regulates excitation and polarization of neuromuscular membranes. Magnesium is of central importance for the smooth functioning of the central nervous system and for muscle metabolism.
It is therefore no wonder that a disruption in the magnesium balance can lead to muscle cramps and muscle tremors, as well as nervousness and a lack of motivation to perform. That's why magnesium is also considered an anti-stress mineral.
But what causes lead to a disruption in the magnesium balance or require an increased intake of this vital mineral? Over-fertilization of soil often leads to low amounts of magnesium in the native feed, so that horses simply do not absorb enough magnesium and react with the typical nutrition-related deficiency symptoms mentioned above. But often hidden absorption disorders (e.g. due to stress on the gastrointestinal tract) can also lead to a reduced absorption of magnesium in the organism. Mental and physical stress cause the body to use more magnesium, as does loss through sweat. Other causes of increased consumption of magnesium in the body can be chronic exposure to heavy metals, as well as increased intake of calcium and protein.
For the reasons described above, many horses suffer from a latent magnesium deficiency and can therefore react nervously and susceptible to stress, have difficulty concentrating, show muscular problems and are not very resilient. A targeted administration of magnesium can help here and is highly recommended to support calmness and relaxed muscles.
